Cancer treatment continues to improve as more advanced research is conducted in the pursuit of a cure. There are several approaches to treating cancer, including established methods like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and the surgical removal of cancerous tumors. There are non-traditional treatments such as the ones using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). And there are cutting-edge procedures which are under development in clinical trials. Depending on the cancer, what stage the disease has advanced to, and the patient’s situation, most practitioners of Western medicine prescribe cytotoxic drugs with the main goal being to kill the patient’s cancerous cells. This is called chemotherapy, or commonly, “chemo”. Radiation therapy (also known as radiotherapy) is the use of ionizing radiation to treat cancer. The radiation is aimed directly at tumors and damages cancerous cells leading to “cellular death”. Radiotherapy is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy drug regimens. Cancer surgery, or surgical oncology, is the oldest form of cancer treatment and involves surgical procedures that are done for both diagnostic and curative purposes. The latter can be accomplished when cancer is localized and can be fully removed from the patient’s body. Treatment of cancer through CAM is often undertaken in health & wellness centers and holistic-medicine clinics. The alternatives afforded by this type of care range from diet & nutritional cures and natural herbal remedies, to techniques like meditation and yoga, to Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
