Despite being a leading cause of death, lung cancer is a preventable disease. A clear cause-and-effect relationship has been established between smoking and the incidence of lung cancer with as many as 80% of lung cancers attributable to smoking. Even heavy smokers can reduce the likelihood of lung cancer simply by quitting smoking. Invariably, malignant tumors begin to develop in the spongy lining of the lungs' branching tubular airways, the bronchi. Although more than 20 types of malignant lung tumors have been identified, the two major types are known, based on the appearance of cancer cells under the microscope, as "small-cell lung cancer" and "non-small-cell lung cancer", and they require different treatment. Small-cell lung cancer occurs primarily in heavy smokers, while the non-small-cell variety incorporates several types of malignant lung tumors with similar characteristics, including squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.Malignant lung tumors often spread rapidly to other organs - especially the liver, the brain, the adrenal glands and bones -in a process called metastasis. As lung cancer is a particularly virulent form of cancer, early detection of malignant lung tumors is vital.
